IEEE Activities

IEEE Activities, Institute Level:

  • Member, PSPB Strategic Planning Committee, 2008-09, 2011 - present.
    • Work on this committee of the Publication Services and Products Board (PSPB) has allowed me to stay closely connected to some of the intricate workings of the IEEE, taking part in strategic planning for the IEEE’s most valued property: our publication services and products. These include IEEE Xplore, the IEL, IEEE Press, and various other entities. Having been a member of the PSPB for six years (elected) has given me a perspective for work on this committee, and one that is shared by a relatively small number of individuals over the past few years.
  • Chair, TAB Newsletters Committee, 2000-2001, 2010 - present.
    • This committee is a subcommittee of the Periodicals Committee of the IEEE Technical Activities Board (TAB). This committee conducts the business of the IEEE periodicals, from scrutinizing and approving of new periodicals, to scope changes, to virtually all business that affects the true life blood of the IEEE: our intellectual property as contained in our more than 140 periodicals. The TAB Newsletters Committee consists of the various editors of IEEE newsletters, and is concerned with issues that specifically affect these periodicals.
  • Member, TAB Periodicals Review and Advisory Committee, 1999 - present.
    • Work on this committee has been a very rewarding experience. This committee of volunteers (that is, volunteers working to help other volunteers, the hundreds of Editors and other professionals who make our periodicals what they are today) is charged with “reviewing” all periodicals of the IEEE (all transactions and magazines) on a five-year cycle. Each review is carried out face to face with editors and society/council representatives, and focuses on helping periodicals maintain their quality and timeliness in competitive positioning within the vast world of technical publishing in the electrical engineering scientific community.  Through my work on this committee, I have met individuals representing every periodical of the IEEE (some on more than one occasion in the review cycle), and it has enabled my understanding of the diverse nature of IEEE publications.
  • Chair, TAB Periodicals Review and Advisory Committee, 2002-2003, 2005-2009.
    • For two separate terms I have been fortunate enough to chair this important committee (see above for description of this committee).
  • Member, TAB Periodicals Committee, 2000-2001, 2003 - present.
    • Service on this committee, and its various subcommittees (see above), has been rewarding and educational.
  • Member, TAB Publications Services and Products Board (PSPB), 2004-2009.
    • I served two terms on the PSPB (see further description above), both terms as an elected “member at large”.
  • Member, TAB Joint TAB/PSPB Products and Services Committee, 2005-2008.
    • This is a joint committee of TAB and PSPB, looking at all issues that require joint decisions between TAB and PSPB.
  •  Member, TAB PSPB Operating Committee, 2005-2009.
    • This committee serves the PSPB, and oversees all issues brought forth to the PSPB general assembly (which meets face to face three times each year at the Board of Directors meeting series), including pricing of products, budgets, and other important matters.
  • Member, TAB Management Committee, 2001.
    • Similar to the PSPB operating committee (see above), this committee oversees TAB business of the general assembly of society/council presidents, Division Directors, and other volunteers on the TAB in preparing materials for the TAB meetings (membership convenes three times each year).

IEEE Control Systems Society:

The Control Systems Society (CSS) is one of the technical societies of the IEEE.  I have been recognized by international organizations such as the CSS for technical, organizational, and administrative abilities in running of international conferences, technical publications, and general administration of technical and non-technical activities.  The more important of these offices and service positions are:

  • Coordinator, Conference Operations, 2008 – present.
  • Co-General Chair, IEEE Conference on Decision and Control (special joint conference with the European Control Conference), 2005.
  • Chair, IEEE Control Systems Best Paper Award Committee, 2001-2004.
  • Chair and Member, Nominating Committee, 2000, 2002, 2005.
  • Chair, Standing Committee on Conference Administration, 2000 - present.
  •  President, IEEE Control Systems Society, 1999.
  • President-Elect, IEEE CSS, 1998.
  • General Chair for the American Control Conference, held in San Diego, CA, Jun 1999.
  • Vice President for Financial Activities, IEEE CSS, 1997.
  • Vice President for Publication Activities, IEEE CSS, term began in 1995, re-elected for 1996.
  • Technical Program Chair for the American Control Conference, Albuquerque, NM, 1997.
  • General Chair for the IEEE International Conference on Control Applications, held in Dearborn, Michigan, with an automotive control systems theme.  This annual event had a unique form in 1996 as it combined two other symposia (IEEE International Symposium on Intelligent Control and the IEEE Symposium on Computer-Aided Control System Design) into one large meeting; Sep 1996.
  • Elected Member, Board of Governors, IEEE CSS.  The election for membership on this board takes place annually among the members of the CSS through a mail ballot  Each year, six members are elected to serve a three-year term, and six members are appointed for a one-year term, so that the Board typically has less than 30 members (there are other, ex officio members, such as the President and Vice Presidents); 1994-1996.
  • Member, Steering Committee for IEEE Trans. on Control System Technology, 1993-1996.
  • Technical Vice-Chair, American Control Conference, San Francisco, Jun 1993.
  • Technical Co-Chair, IEEE Conference on Control Applications, Dayton, OH, Aug 1992.
  • Member, Technical Program Committee:  Conference on Decision and Control: 1990, 1991, 1993, 1994; Conference on Control Applications: 1992; American Control Conference:  1993, 1994, 1997.
  • Chair, Standing Committees in IEEE CSS: Student Activities, 1986-1988; Publications, 1992.
  • Chapter Chair, Columbus Section, IEEE CSS, 1985-1988, 1990-1991.
